Facts about Broward County Public Schools (BCPS)
- The largest fully accredited public school district in the nation, Broward County Public Schools received the recognition from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in 2006.
- BCPS has been recognized by the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) for student achievement every year for the past seven years.
- The District has a diverse multi-cultural/multi-ethnic population with students from 166 countries speaking 50 languages. BCPS educates 24,631 English Language Learner (ELL) students.
- BCPS has maintained an annual student population of more than 250,000 every year since the 2000/01 school year.
- More than 120,000 adults participate in the District’s adult education programs. The District provides educational programs for more than 40,000 students with special needs, including more than 10,000 gifted students.
- The District provides special programs for learning readiness for its 4,002 student pre-kindergarten population.
- Approximately 23,000 school-aged children participate in District after school child care programs.
- District grant funding exceeded $183 million in 2006/07, an increase of almost $15 million over 2005/06. Overall, the District has seen its total grant funding triple since 1993/94, when grant program funding totaled $61.2 million.
- Broward County Public Schools has been an ‘A’ school district twice in the last three years and has earned either an ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade by the state in each of the last five years.
- Broward County Public Schools was named a finalist for the 2008 Broad Prize for Urban Education, an annual $1 million award that honors urban school districts across the country that are making the greatest progress in raising student achievement.
- One hundred thirty-five schools earned the Golden School Award and 17 collected the Silver School Award for the 2007/08 school year. Five schools received the Golden School Award for the 10th time and three schools collected the honor for the 20th time. Additionally, five schools received their 29th Golden School Award, receiving the award in every year since the Department of Education implemented the program. These awards are presented to schools that have demonstrated community involvement through their exemplary volunteer programs.
- Nine District high schools were included on Newsweek Magazine’s list of top high schools in the nation in 2008: Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Nova, Stranahan, Fort Lauderdale, J.P. Taravella, Cypress Bay, Flanagan, Pembroke Pines Charter and Boyd Anderson. The rankings are determined by the number of advanced academic tests given at a school, divided by the number of seniors graduating in May or June.
- Six Broward high schools were named in the America’s Best High Schools 2008 Report, published by U.S. News & World Report. The Broward high schools honored were Atlantic Technical Center, Fort Lauderdale, Nova, Pompano Beach, Stranahan and William T. McFatter.
